What type of Frenchman came to the New World?

Protestants. When the New World was first being colonized (late 1500s to early 1600s) holy wars against Catholics and Protestants were raging across Europe. France was a Catholic state, so its Protestants went searching for another place to live. Some Catholics came as well. All were adventurers looking for a better life.
