How do i stop the pup from yelping when im out? if she doesnt whine she chews?

i have a 10month old female whippet cross pup. shes from a gyspys camp and isnt used to being indoors but is with kennels so i got a crate. she sleeps in it fine at night, during the day without it she yelped the whole time i was out and the neighbour complained about it. so i got the crate but she chewed the plastic base to bits.then i put her cover wrapped around the floor but shes chewing on that. if she doesnt chew on that shes yelping. what do i do? ive got her over 15 toys and rawhides etc but im worried it wont work and she will hurt herself. will she calm down? ive had her only a week and shes been hurt in the past. please help someone im wanting to keep her. shes fine being shut in another room etc aswell.
